What is CBT & EMDR Therapy?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy are both evidence based psychological therapies.

CBT Therapy

CBT is a talking therapy with a focus on cognitions (our thinking) and any behaviours which may be maintaining the psychological difficulties which you seek help to overcome. The therapy is collaborative, where you work with your therapist to achieve your goals for recovery.

Once your assessment is completed, you will be provided with a “formulation”, which is an explanation of why you have your particular difficulties at this particular time. This formulation will explain how your thoughts and/or behaviours can be addressed in order to achieve recovery.

CBT is an “active” therapy, so as well as your 1-1 session, you will be provided with weekly targets to complete. Self-discovery is guided within therapy through discussion, record keeping (of your thoughts and of your behaviours) applying strategies to change your thoughts and behaviours, including “experiments to test out current unhelpful thought or behaviour patterns

EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy is a more recent psychological therapy that has a good evidence base for a number of problems (especially PTSD). The goal of EMDR is to reduce the long-lasting, intrusive and distressing effects of traumatic memories using an eight-phase approach that involves recalling distressing memories while receiving one of several types of bilateral sensory input, such as side to side eye movements. Thereafter, the meaning or interpretation of the traumatic memory is cognitively and emotionally processed allowing “reframing” of the memory to occur.
